Dosage and Administration of Generic Famvir Famciclovir
Generic Famvir Famciclovir is used as a medication to treat Zoster, postherpetic neuralgia, genital herpes: primary infection, aggravation of chronic infection, for prevention of attacks.
Herpes Zoster
In herpes zoster, the suggested dosage is 500 mg every 8 hours for 7 days. Start the therapy quickly once herpes zoster is detected. There is no evidence on efficiency of treatment started greater than 72 hours after rash onset.
Recurrent Genital Herpes
In this disease, the suggested dosage is 1000 mg twice daily for 1 day. Start therapy at the first sign or symptom of genital herpes recurrence. The effectiveness of Famvir (Famciclovir) has not been recognized when treatment is started more than 6 hours after onset of symptoms or lesions.
Suppression of Recurrent Genital Herpes
The suggested dosage is 250 mg. It has to be taken twice daily for up to 1 year. Use of Famvir therapy after 1 year of treatment, has not been studied.
Recurrent Herpes Labialis (Cold Sores)
A1500 mg as a single dose is suggested in Cold Sores. Start treatment at the first sign or symptom of a cold sore (e.g. tingling, itching or burning).
HIV-infected Patients
For recurrent Orolabial or genital herpes simplex infection, a 500 mg twice daily for 7 days has been approved.
Patients with Reduced Renal Function
In patients with reduced renal function, dosage reduction is recommended.
Administration with Food
When Famciclovir was administered with food, penciclovir Cmax reduced just about 50%. Since the systemic availability of penciclovir (AUC) was not changed, it appears that Famvir may be taken without regard to meals.
Contraindications
Generic Famvir Famciclovir has been contraindicated in patients having hypersensitivity to Famciclovir or to any of the components of the drug. Besides those who have hypersensitivity to Penciclovir also should not use this drug.
